5 Tips to Connect in an Instant on Social Media (#1 Tip from @RickiLake )
Social media has changed the world forever. In just 140 characters or an update to your Facebook status, you have the potential to connect with a complete stranger in the same town or across the globe. In an instant, Friendships are being formed. Business is taking place. People are connecting. And the world will never be the same.
But it isn’t that easy…
Many people are standing on the sidelines of social media, unsure of how to jump into the conversation and contribute their thoughts. There is uncertainty about how one can form bonds with people they have never met “face to face.”
Are you one of many asking the question, “how?”
That is why we are here and you can know one thing for sure… You are in the right place! We have teamed up with Ricki Lake, one of the most engaged celebrities on social media, to share 5 tips for connecting with people in an instant on social media.
Watch this video to hear Ricki Lake’s #1 Tip for Connecting on Social Media
2. Be Respectful.
Leave judgment at the door and respect that other people on social media have beliefs and opinions that are their own. This is what makes them unique! Just as in offline relationships, if you want to make friends, you have to be one first. If you want people to respect you, start by being respectful of them.
3. Be Inspiring.
People like social media for many reasons. Many will share that they feel uplifted and empowered to live their best life by connecting with inspiring and positive people. If you want to make a lot of friends on social media, be inspiring. Be encouraging. Be a friend.
4. Be Generous.
The more you offer to help others in life, the more “likeable” you will be. When on social media you can help others by supporting their work. Take the time to mention people, and give them positive feedback. When you re-tweet or share the content of others they feel good and are more likely to appreciate and connect with you. Remember, “it’s not about me, it’s about we”.
5. Find a Fun Community!
Following a hashtag community on Twitter or joining a group or community on Facebook is a great way to connect with people who are like you and who are usually looking for the same type of connection you are looking for. Twitter and Facebook are the largest gathering of individuals on the planet. Communities are simply small groups within. Think of communities on social media as you would small break-out sessions at a very, very large conference. The name on the door is the community. Pick the door that tells you that you share common interests with those on the other side. Then, open the door, step inside and say hello via a tweet or a post on the Facebook wall. You will be surprised that many are waiting for… you!
If you are looking for a community that is based on friendship and connection, please join Ricki Lake and the Friends of Ricki for a very special announcement and a first hand look at social media connection on Ustream at http://ustream.tv/rickilake and using Twitter hashtag #FriendsofRicki at 5pm PST this Wednesday, February 1. We look forward to seeing you and connecting with you there!
Do you have any ideas or questions about making connections on social media? Please leave your thoughts in the comments and let’s discuss.
Happy Holidays To Our Social Media Girlfriends!
As always, you lovely ladies (and some amazing men) show up in the Social Media Girlfriends stream and share your love and support on a daily basis.
We adore seeing your smiling faces during our daily (Monday through Friday) mini-chats at 9am PST and noon EST. How cool is it that the Pacific Coast (and everyone in between) gets to have coffee while saying hello to the East Coasters who are having lunch? It’s just a daily check in so we can all get our mojo revved and our smiles brightened together. And then of course, we all buzz by to say hello throughout the day. It’s just really amazing to watch friendships form and people give and receive virtual hugs. If you haven’t stopped by yet, join us!
Our community is truly a treasure.
We hope you all are enjoying a festive season of celebrating the blessings in your life with your loved ones and of course we wish you an absolutely stunning new year with plenty of laughter, love and dreams that come true. We are here to support you as you live the life you were born to live and we absolutely appreciate your kindness, your wonderful sense of humor, your generosity and your love!
Thank you so much for being a part of the Social Media Girlfriends “Movement”. We heart you more than you know!
Happy holidays to you and your family and many happy returns!
xoxo
PS: Don’t forget to join us on the 1st Thursday of every month at 6pm PST/9pm EST for our monthly simulchat! We have LOTS of fun stuff coming up to share with you, but we also want to hear from you!

What My Girlfriends Mean To Me!
“Best friends are like good bras; hard to find, supportive, comfortable, always lifts you up, never leaves you hanging, make you look great, and ALWAYS close to your heart.”
~Author Unknown
A good friend is like a BRA find the right one and you don’t squirm so much and to quote a friend of mine “they make you perky”!
I have heard “Men will pat your ass, but women will save it.” I have some great guy friends but they just don’t get me the way my girlfriends do!
I have learned so much from the Social Media world by reading, attending conferences, webinars and participating in community. Through good and more importantly through the bad the house that built me is the support I get from my Social Media “girl”friends.
In honor of “National Girlfriend’s Day” I am leaving you with some thoughts
I live by three very important yet very simple rules:
Trust God
Clean House
Help Others
God.
I am a very spiritual person and if the concept of God makes you uncomfortable, or you are an Agnostic or Atheistic, try this one:
GOD=Good Orderly Direction.
That’s all.
Clean House.
I try to keep my side of the street clean. But am I perfect at this…uh NO. I admit to some ‘poison pen’ emails, texts, posts that can’t be taken back. I am a passionate, type A personality, with a flair for the dramatic. However, I want to attract people and throwing people, places, things under the bus or speaking derogatorily about anything, more than likely won’t do that!
Pointing the Finger
I am not talking about THAT one. Remember, when you point a finger at others, there are three pointing back at you meaning: you spot it YOU GOT IT too! That goes both ways. I have always thought if you see good in others, you must have it in yourself, and when you don’t like something about someone else it is probably something you don’t like in yourself. OUCH. And that is sad but true. Although there is societal hate and violent crime, we don’t have to engage in them to know they are wrong.
Help Others.
Look in your own “backyard” and be the person you wish others would be.
Want comments on your blog? Comment on other people’s blogs.
Want followers? Follow others.
Want Facebook Likes? Like other people’s pages.
Want people to Retweet you? Retweet others.
Want people to respond to you on Facebook profile? Respond to others.
Want the charity you work with to have support? Support others charities.
Want friends? Be a friend!
Want respect? RESPECT others!
Novel concepts, eh (as my Canadian friends would say, yes I am talking about you Tobey Deys)
I don’t live a very complicated life. I am a simpleton way more than any of you would ever guess. I am just a girl from Tucson, Arizona, who looks at the world with hope and big dreamy eyes.
There is always an invitation for you to come dream with me of a better way for all of us to make this journey easier for each other. Look in the mirror and be the friend you want others to be!
Love, support and compassion goes a long way. Try it as often as you can.
DREAM BIG….as Carrie Wilkerson, The Barefoot Executive always says. I DO!
Will you be my bra??
